With a capacity of 242 MW, the Ararat wind farm becomes the company's largest in the country
Our parent company, Iberdrola, is strengthening its presence in Australia with the acquisition of the Ararat wind farm, located in the state of Victoria. The transaction, completed after receiving all necessary regulatory approvals, represents the addition of the company's largest onshore wind asset in the country, with an installed capacity of 242 megawatts and operational since 2017. It is also Iberdrola's first own generation project in Victoria, one of the states with the highest population growth and renewable energy ambitions in the country.
With this acquisition, the energy group expands its presence in Australia, where it already operates in five states—New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia—and has over 2,500 MW of installed capacity across wind farms, solar plants, and energy storage systems. The acquisition will allow the company to strengthen its supply portfolio for business customers and secure stable revenue through power purchase agreements in a market that aims to achieve 95% renewable generation by 2035.
This move is part of Iberdrola's global strategy to concentrate its investments in regulated businesses and generation assets with long-term contracts, as well as in markets considered key to its growth. In Australia, the company plans to invest €1 billion by 2028 and has also begun expanding in the network sector with its participation in the VNI West project, an infrastructure project designed to improve the interconnection between Victoria and New South Wales.
The acquisition of Ararat adds to other corporate transactions carried out by the company in the first months of the year, including the sale of assets in France and Spain and the expansion of its alliance with Norges to incorporate new solar capacity. All these initiatives seek to optimize its global portfolio and advance sustainable electrification through renewables, networks, and storage.
