Our patron will undertake the landmark Sunshine Coast rail project in southeast Queensland
The Spanish company Acciona recently announced that, as part of the CoastalTraX consortium, it has been awarded the design and pre-construction contract for one of the two main packages of the first phase of The Wave high-capacity passenger rail line, which will connect Beerwah and Caloundra. The CoastalTraX consortium will be responsible for carrying out the construction work once environmental approvals have been obtained.
Acciona, along with its consortium partners Georgiou, Mott MacDonald, Aurecon, and local rail subcontractor DT Infrastructure, will design and execute the works for the first phase of The Wave project. This first phase will provide 19 kilometers of double-track heavy goods passenger rail and associated infrastructure between Beerwah and Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, significantly improving transport connections and supporting residential development in one of the fastest-growing regions of Southeast Queensland.
The new rail line will provide faster and more reliable connections between the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, and Brisbane regions, linking people to jobs, education, healthcare, and key tourist destinations, as well as reducing traffic congestion on the road network. New train stations will also be built, integrating the area's natural beauty, local character, heritage, and history into their architectural design. Nearly seven kilometers of viaduct will connect the two new stations.
Acciona also recently celebrated the opening of the new Gold Coast rail station, which provides improved access to public transport and alleviates pressure on the nearby Helensvale station in Queensland. This project was developed by the Acciona Georgiou Joint Venture in collaboration with the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority.
During the design and construction phase, the team achieved several project milestones, including the construction of Queensland's first station built entirely on a double-track elevated viaduct, the installation of 24 reinforced concrete beams, each weighing 52 tons, and the installation of over 450 tons of structural steel.
