Acciona reaches new milestones and signs new agreements in Australia

The company reports recent developments in some of its projects in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney

The Brisbane Move project by the City of Brisbane, Australia, in which our patron Acciona and Arup collaborated, recently achieved the Infrastructure Sustainability Council's Leader rating with a score of 89.02, the highest ever recorded in the state of Queensland. This result reflects the design decisions and construction efficiencies that reduced carbon emissions throughout the project's lifecycle by almost 60% compared to the original conceptual design.

The works transformed more than 2.5 kilometers of Brisbane's city center and included a new tunnel, station upgrades, the reinforcement of the Victoria Bridge, new sewage infrastructure, and significant improvements to public space throughout the city's south and financial district. Acciona emphasizes that emissions reduction was integrated from the outset through practical decisions such as the use of renewable energy during tunnel construction, the selection of more sustainable vehicles on site, the reduction of cement content in the concrete, and the reuse of materials wherever possible. All these measures prevented the emission of approximately 43,000 tons of carbon.

Furthermore, Acciona also announced the start of a collaboration with Ironside Resources on the M80 ring road completion project in Melbourne. This collaboration will create employment opportunities for veterans of the Armed Forces while supporting important civil construction projects.

Tim Myles, M80's social contracting manager, emphasized that "it's fantastic to see our collaboration with such an incredible organization. We look forward to seeing the extraordinary work they do with veterans and helping them expand their business in the infrastructure sector." The start of this collaboration was commemorated with the arrival of a dump truck carrying a visual artwork in tribute to Australians who have lost their lives in combat.

Acciona also recently celebrated achieving the highest design score ever awarded under Australia's infrastructure sustainability rating program for the Western Harbour Tunnel project in Sydney, New South Wales. With a score of 101.1 out of 10, the project has received a "Leader" design rating. Project Director Andrew Marsonet emphasized Acciona's commitment to sustainability: "At the Western Harbour Tunnel, sustainability remains a guiding principle, reflecting our initial commitment to leading with a 'regenerative design' mindset."

The rating recognizes a 42% reduction in potable water consumption, representing a saving of approximately 2,560 megaliters over the project's lifetime. Significant carbon savings were also achieved through a 35% reduction in the environmental impact of materials throughout their lifecycle, driven by early collaboration with design partners.
