Our employer transforms wind turbine blades into new and sustainable products such as surfboard fins
Our sponsor Acciona, together with the Australian manufacturer Bolero Surf, announced that the Aussie Boardriders Battle (ABB) surf competition will mark the competition debut of new surfboard fins made from wind turbine blades. This is part of Acciona's Turbine Made initiative, which aims to reuse these components once they reach the end of their useful life.
Acciona emphasizes that the fiberglass found inside wind turbine blades has great intrinsic value and can be transformed into new and sustainable products, such as these high-quality surfboard fins. Designed and manufactured by Bolero Surf, the reuse of this fiberglass eliminates one of the most expensive and labor-intensive parts of traditional fin manufacturing.
The fins will be tested by professional surfer Darcy Crump, who notes that "they feel solid and fast in turns, and knowing they're made from recycled turbine blades makes it even better."
Gavin Reymond, Managing Director of Acciona Energía in Australia, stated that "by launching a product made from turbines, Acciona and Bolero Surf are demonstrating that the circular economy of renewable energy is not a future aspiration, but a reality already being experienced in Australia."
Acciona also announced that Go Places Melbourne, a joint venture with Go-Ahead Australia and the Tokyo Metro Company, has been shortlisted for the concession contract for the MR5 rail line in Melbourne. Based in this city, Acciona has carried out complex and iconic projects across the country, combining excellence in construction and project execution with a proven track record of innovative and sustainable development practices.
According to a spokesperson for the consortium, "Go Places Melbourne brings together three leading rail entities with a long history of cooperation, capable of combining international excellence with local expertise."
