Our employer, Acciona, recently announced on its LinkedIn profile its work with Water Corporation and Jacobs on integrating a groundwater treatment plant into the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant in Perth, Australia. The goal is to achieve a more balanced, sustainable, and stable drinking water supply while reducing the need for chemicals in the process.
The system combines treated groundwater with desalinated water, allowing for the reintroduction of essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These elements help stabilize key parameters like pH, alkalinity, and hardness, optimizing the final water quality for homes in North Perth. Thanks to this approach, it is estimated that chemical use could decrease by up to 50% compared to traditional post-treatment methods.
The early integration of the groundwater treatment plant has simplified operations as production increases, reinforcing the safety and performance of critical infrastructure for the region. Furthermore, the design allows for the application of chemicals only when necessary to comply with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, reducing reliance on corrective processes and improving supply consistency.
Alkimos is the first desalination plant of this scale in Western Australia to use groundwater blending as the primary method for achieving the final water quality. The result is a more climate-resilient and reliable drinking water supply, designed to meet growing demand.
