Nominations are now open for individuals and organizations that have made a contribution to the advancement of relations between the two countries
The Malaspina Awards are an honor bestowed by the Embassy of Spain in Australia and the Association of Spanish Researchers in Australia-Pacific (SRAP), with the sponsorship of our patron, Navantia Australia. They recognize outstanding contributions during the past year, in all fields of research, that contribute to the advancement of relations between Spain and Australia in science, research, culture, and/or technology.
This award is named after Alejandro Malaspina, who led a scientific expedition in the 18th century. Navigators, naturalists, and scientists formed part of the crew and conducted studies in natural history, cartography, ethnography, astronomy, hydrography, and medicine in Latin America, the Pacific, and Australia. Painters, illustrators, writers, and chroniclers also participated in the expedition, and their work was essential for disseminating scientific findings.
Nominations for the 9th Malaspina Awards are open to any Australian or Spanish citizen, as well as any organization registered in either of these countries. The awards committee will be composed of representatives from the Embassy and SRAP, and will assess the impact of the contribution to scientific and cultural ties between Spain and Australia, excellence in the field, and future potential and commitment to building bridges that enhance scientific and cultural exchange.
Nominations should be sent to the Embassy of Spain and Australia and to SRAP. The deadline is April 10, and winners will be contacted on Friday, April 17.
