UGL, a subsidiary of CIMIC, will work alongside Neoen and Tesla on a project that will add 227 MW and 907 MWh of storage capacity in South Australia
UGL, a CIMIC Group company belonging to our patron ACS, has been selected by Neoen and Tesla to execute the second phase of the Goyder battery, one of South Australia's largest battery energy storage systems. The project will expand a key infrastructure for grid stability and the transition to renewable energy.
The second phase will add 227 MW of power and 907 MWh of storage capacity, matching the performance of the first phase, which is currently being built by UGL. Once both phases are completed, the Goyder battery will reach a total capacity of 454 MW and 1,814 MWh.
UGL will be responsible for the infrastructure work necessary for the installation of Tesla's new Megablock technology, including civil, electrical, and high-voltage works, as well as the testing and commissioning of these facilities.
Juan Santamaría, CEO of the ACS Group and Executive Chairman of the CIMIC Group, stated that "this award reflects the strength of our collaboration with Neoen and Tesla, as well as our shared commitment to providing critical, reliable, and large-scale energy infrastructure. With the inclusion of Phase 2, the total contracted UGL capacity for Neoen's battery projects in Australia will exceed 7 GWh. Goyder Battery will play a fundamental role in supporting grid stability and South Australia's transition to renewable energy."
Construction of this second phase is scheduled to begin in August 2026, and the project is expected to be operational by 2028. The battery is part of the Goyder Renewables Zone, a strategic Neoen project located in north-central South Australia, and will contribute to improving energy reliability through long-duration storage services.
